We didn't set out to design this.
Happy accidents have been a crucial part of the design process since people started designing, and this is one of them. This image was created using computer aided design as we were experimenting with new software tools. If you'd like to learn more about what we were up to, there is a story you can read on The Design Lab that shows how it was made. Maybe check that out before reading on.
Our experiments were fairly simple as we sliced through a sphere with just a few imaginary planes and we liked the result. Then we increased the number of planes to a hundred, and then a few hundred, and a ball shape started to form. The results just got better with each pass, and so of course we wanted to see what would happen if we went too far. If you ask the software to intersect a sphere with several thousand planes, it takes hours to crunch the numbers and your computer gets hot! But we were surprised and thrilled when we saw the result of all that computing: we made a moon.
This print rewards very close inspection with incredible detail, and when you step back the image has a completely different feel. We love it, and hope you do too.
That background color, by the way, is a deep midnight blue, and often reads as black depending on the time of day and how brightly lit the room is.
About framing, and if you should choose it
We offer our wall art in framed and unframed versions because framing is a matter of personal style and we want you to have the look that you want for your room.
The wood frame we offer features a clean black design, and the art is protected behind clear acrylic with no decorative matting surrounding the art. We made these choices because we love the look and want our art to be affordable. So if you want a more custom design, the best choice is to start with one of our unframed prints and work with a local framer.
(But we think you'll love our framed version!)
And finally, about delivery
Printing, framing, and carefully packaging your art takes time, but not as much as you might think. Normally it takes days, rather than weeks. We think you'll agree that the short wait is worth it.
